Nursing Staff

Our educational department’s staff work diligently to offer continuing education programs and internships to help nurses stay on top of the most recent advances and to improve their abilities to offer specialized, expert care.

Nursing staff members are supported in their professional development through the efforts of a clinical nurse specialist and unit-based educators. These individuals help ensure that staff members maintain the high level of expertise needed for their specific level of care. Staff members continually expand and hone their knowledge of the neurosciences.

Orientation
New nursing staff members attend a six-week orientation tailored especially for them. This ensures that nurses are properly introduced to the Texas Neurosciences Institute in regards to layout, procedures, protocols, patient care and routines.

Critical Care Internship

Our five-month internship for intensive training in critical care helps nurses to better understand the intensity of a neurosurgical intensive care situation. Managing a patient with a continuous seizure, and monitoring a patient in the critical neuro unit following brain surgery require a higher level of training. This internship is designed to give hands-on training with the help of seasoned professionals in a real-life setting.

Neuroscience Fellowship
This 10-week fellowship is designed for nurses who have completed their basic orientation of the neuro unit. This highly specialized program is customized based on the participant’s experience and knowledge.

The fellowship allows nurses to learn the different facets of neurosurgery and continue learning in their own specialized department, and/or learn about the latest techniques and technologies available for neuro patients.

Intermediate/Progressive Care Internship
This 12-week program concentrates on training nurses who administer care in our intermediate intensive care unit. In addition to training in high observation and vitals monitoring, nurses learn how to anticipate problems that arise with a variety of medical and surgical patients who require a level of care between critical care and floor care. This program teaches staff now to care for those patients and respond quickly to changing needs.
