The care offered by the Texas Neurosciences Institute
is unmatched in South Texas, offering several levels
of dedicated neuroscience nursing care,
including:
- Intensive care
- Intermediate care
- General floor care
Our extensive staff of highly educated, trained
and skilled nurses comprise various levels of nursing
expertise. These include:
- Critical
- Intermediate
- General neuro
Nurses provide care that is personalized and at
a level that fits the acuity of the patients as they
progress through the system. Multiple levels of care
meet the needs of our varied patients and prevent
overcrowding in our dedicated Neuro ICU. This need-based
design and thinking makes the Texas Neurosciences
Institute a leader in patient care.

Neuro ICU
The Neuro ICU is designed to provide care for high-risk, critically ill neuro
patients. Patients range from postoperative cranial or spinal surgery patients
to acute stroke or Guillian Barre patients. Significant changes in these patients
can occur rapidly and subtly, therefore the unit is staffed with dedicated, specialized
nurses. Rapid recognition of changes is key to positive patient outcome, and
is best achieved in an environment of collaboration by nurses and physicians
who specialize in caring for this highly individualized patient population.
Neuro Intermediate Unit
The Neuro Intermediate Unit provides care for patients with neurological conditions
who have co-morbidities requiring cardiac or respiratory monitoring, as well as
frequent monitoring for potential neurological changes. To facilitate close visual
observation and monitoring, a four-bed high observation area allows nurses to
manage and care for patients. Staff is highly skilled in managing stable vasoactive
intravenous drips. Because of the sophistication of skills and level of care
provided, postoperative patients return to this unit following Deep Brain Stimulation.
The Neuro Intermediate Unit is the designated stroke unit for the facility. Nurses
on all neuro units maintain National Institute of Health Stroke Scale certification and participate in
ongoing stroke-related education.
Neurosurgical Floor
The Neurosurgical Floor is specifically designed to keep the nurses closer to their
patients by having more rooms near the nurses’ station. This is key in caring for patients with neurological
problems who may experience confusion.
Four rooms serve as high observation areas to provide clear views of the patients
from the nurses’ station. Nursing staff are experts at progressing patients
toward recovery and at recognizing changes requiring immediate attention. They
collaborate with physicians and other health care providers to deliver quality
care for a variety of patients, including medical and surgical neuroscience
patients. Texas Neurosciences Institute 9
Neurosurgical Admissions Unit
This unit’s nursing staff is dedicated to making the preoperative experience
for neurosurgical patients run smoothly.
Upon arrival, patients are registered
efficiently and privately at their bed sides rather than in a public area,
and promptly complete their clinical preparation. This one-on-one experience
allows patients to be physically and mentally prepared for their operations
or procedures.
Staff members possess the skills to care for the postoperative patient and
recognize any changes that require immediate attention. This highly focused
unit is making a difference in the patient experience.
